Where: The Horniman Museum, 100 London Rd, London SE23 3PQ

The museum catalogue entry reads: Manuscript of the Ethiopian church. Characters in black and red ink on two narrow skins laced together, 167 lines; brought to England by men of the 4th regiment. Date: 1868

Museum reference: 1976.475i

Provenance: The men of the 4th (The King’s Own Royal) Regiment of Foot took part in the attack on Maqdala, which took place in 1868. It is conceivable they may have picked up this manuscript at other points on the march, hence the asterisk.
